Jordan’s Water Ministry signs agreement to upgrade Zara Ma’in station

AMMAN — The Ministry of Water and Irrigation signed an agreement with a local contracting company to upgrade the Zara Ma’in water station on Tuesday, under the USAID-funded agreement, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The agreement includes 1,000-cubic-metre water reservoir and an alternative water pipeline worth $1.8 million, 80 per cent of which funded by a US grant, will be built to ensure sustainable water supply from the pumping station to other areas, improving the performance and efficiency of water resources and the infrastructure of the supply system, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Water and Irrigation Minister Mohammad Al Najjar said that the Zara station, which has a capacity of 100,000 cubic metres per day, or 38 million cubic metres per year, of drinking water, is one of the main systems for supplying water to Amman.

In coordination with USAID, the ministry is replacing the old pumps with new ones to each of the major stations to ensure the system’s long-term viability, the minister said, noting that the project is expected to be completed within six months.
