Egypt Overtakes Spain As the World’s Largest Orange Exporter

Egypt is currently the largest exporter of oranges by volume across the globe, surpassing competing countries like Spain and South Africa, yet these two states still make much more in revenue from their citrus plant exports, Financial Times reported.

The current position is attributed to a currency that enables local farmers to sell the produce at competitive prices, according to Head of the Agricultural Export Council's Citrus Committee Mohamed Abdel Hady.

Egypt exported approximately 1.8 million tons of oranges in 2019, with revenues standing at about $660 million (EGP 10.35 billion), according to the news portal.

“Disruptions earlier this year due to coronavirus may mean the quantities exported will be less than 2019,” the economic news platform said.

The North African country has remained, as reported last May, the world's largest exporter of oranges,
