Egyptian leader, African Union chief talk about developments of Ethiopian dam matter – MENAFN.COM

( MENAFN ) On Saturday, May. 8 Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi conducted negotiations with President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Felix Tshisekedi, also the present chairperson of the African Union, on the most recent developments of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) matter. In the assembly, Sisi stated: "Egypt's appreciation of the Congolese president's relevant efforts and confidence in his ability to deal with the GERD issue," noted the Egyptian presidency in a report. Egypt and its downstream neighbor Sudan raised worries regarding the Ethiopian conclusion to unilaterally conduct a second filling of the GERD later 2021, as it did in 2020, without reaching a prior tripartite legally binding deal on the regulations of filling and operating the dam. Both downstream states look for the development of an international quartet of the African Union, the United States, the European Union and the United Nations to increase possibilities of reaching the desired deal, a proposal not hailed by upstream Ethiopia.
