Egypt’s Environment Minister attends UNEA-5 virtual meeting

Egypt's Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad participated, on Tuesday, in the fifth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5), which was held via videoconferencing from 22 to 23 February. The meeting took place under the theme "Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals". During her participation, Fouad noted that the meeting is taking place in unique circumstances, as it was held virtually for the first time. She stressed the need to strengthen action for the protection and preservation of nature to achieve the goals of sustainable development. The UNEA-5 aims to strengthen action to protect and restore nature and nature-based solutions to achieve the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This will take place in three complementary dimensions, namely social, economic and environmental. The agenda of the session's first part focused on urgent and procedural decisions, while substantive matters that require in-depth negotiations will be postponed to a resumed session of the coming meeting in February 2022. The meeting will be coordinated for identification and agreement at a later stage.
