QU’s FPDE holds entrepreneurial competition – The Peninsula

The Foundation Program’s Department of English (FPDE) at Qatar University (QU) recently organised its Biannual Entrepreneurial Presentations Competition.

This was the fourth time that the event was held virtually since Fall 2020. This year, due to Ramadan, the competition was conducted virtually after Iftar.

The presentation competition is an offshoot event of the course’s Entrepreneurship Project which requires teams of students to create new business ideas for the Qatari market. This event also represents a collaboration between Qatar University’s Foundation Program Department of English, the Center for Entrepreneurship in the QU College of Business and Economics, and the Bedaya Center for Entrepreneurship and Career Development.

Three female teams and three male teams presented their business ideas in separate competitions to a panel of local judges. Their ideas centred on tourism.

Some of their ideas include customised scarfs or shawls, a truck that delivers the souq experience directly to customers, and a new way of doing business in the metaverse. The students had 6-10 minutes to present, and following their presentation, each judge asked one question. The event allowed participating students to demonstrate their business English abilities, apply their knowledge from business college coursework, and exposed them to the value of entrepreneurship.
