Rights body signs MoU to protect workers’ rights in Saudi Arabia

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia's Human Rights Commission (HRC) and the Saudi National Committee of Workers' Committees on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding to increase coordination to protect workers' rights and combat human trafficking. HRC Chairman Awwad Al-Awwad and the chairman of the national committee, Nasser Al-Jarid, signed the agreement. The two bodies will work together to address issues related to workers' rights and review matters on a scientific basis. The HRC is an independent body whose role is to protect and promote human rights in accordance with international standards, and to ensure that they are implemented within the provisions of Islamic law. The HRC, in collaboration with Alwaleed Philanthropies, recently launched a series of training programs and seminars to promote and protect human rights. The training programs aim to boost the capabilities of workers in the field of human rights and charity work. Last year, the US State Department upgraded Saudi Arabia's ranking in its annual report on human trafficking in recognition of the Kingdom's efforts in this regard. The report, globally recognized as the most comprehensive analysis of anti-trafficking efforts by nations, raised the status of Saudi Arabia from "tier 3" to "tier 2" watch list. RIYADH, DUBAI: Saudi
