Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Wednesday criticized President Joe Biden for his opposition to a progressive push to wipe out $50,000 in student loan debt for borrowers, saying that his argument against it "is looking shakier by the day." When asked about loan forgiveness during a CNN town hall in Wisconsin on Tuesday, Biden threw his support behind a less ambitious plan to cancel student debt. "I do think in this moment of economic pain and strain that we should be eliminating interest on the debts that are accumulated," he said. "I'm prepared to write off the $10,000 debt, but not $50,000. I don't think I have the authority to do it by the sign of a pen." Last month, the Biden administration extended a freeze on student loan payments through September 30, 2021.
