Egypt’s universities to begin new year on 17 October; ‘hybrid’ education model to be implemented

Egypt's 2020/2021 university academic year will begin on Saturday 17 October, with the implementation of a "hybrid education“ model aimed at reducing the density of students inside education halls, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the Supreme Council of Universities approved a timeline for the 2020/2021 academic year, with the first semester to run from 17 October until 21 January.

The first semester's exams will be held from 23 January to 4 February, followed by a mid-year recess that will last till 18 February.

The second term will be from 20 February till 10 June, with exams set to be held in June and July of 2021.

The SCU also approved a proposal on hybrid education, which adopts a blend of traditional classroom instruction and online learning activities.

Schools and universities suspended in-person classes in March in the wake of the pandemic. Most students have remained at home since, with assignments given online, although pupils taking their final high school exams did so in person in June and July.

Tuesday's announcement by the SCU comes days after Egypt's education ministry pushed the start of new school year to 17 October
