Viewpoint: Derivatives key to Asia’s ethylene balance

Shanghai, 27 December (Argus) — Ethylene supply in Asia has been tight throughout 2021 despite massive cracker expansions and a demand slowdown in China in the second half of the year.

Balanced incremental ethylene supply and demand is one reason. A significant reduction of long-haul shipments from the US, Europe and the Middle East, weaker cracker operations in the fourth quarter from low margins and logistic constrains also accounted for the tight balance.

China imported 1.9mn t/yr of ethylene over January-November, 4pc more on the year.
