The global Covid-19 infection rate is reaching the highest it's been during the pandemic thus far, the director-general of the World Health Organization said Thursday, as cases and deaths go up around the world at alarming rates despite the rollout of the Covid-19 vaccine.

The number of new cases each week has “nearly doubled” over the past two months, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Thursday, and is “approaching the highest rate of infection that we have seen so far during the pandemic.”





Some countries that had previously avoided outbreaks earlier in the pandemic are seeing them now, Tedros said, such as Papua New Guinea.





According to data compiled by the New York Times, global Covid-19 cases have gone up by 25% over the past 14 days, and deaths have increased by 17%.
