The Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) doctors were able to successfully perform its first EndoVascular Aortic Repair (EVAR) procedure.

The interventional pro- cedure was performed by a multidisciplinary team of experts at the hospital led by Dr. Sharif Khashaba, Consultant Vascular/Endovascular Surgeon, and assisted by Dr. Sawsan Kadhem and Dr. Am- mar Khamis, Chief Radiology Residents, Dr. Nada AlMan- soori, Consultant Anesthetist, and Dr. Ahmed Abdulbadee, Chief Anaesthesia Resident, on a 62-year-old Bahraini patient with an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

“An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is characterized by weakening and bulging of the lower portion of the aorta. If left untreated, the AAA may rupture and is nearly always fatal,” Dr. Khashaba says.

“In the past, those who required AAA repair had a major surgical procedure that involved opening the abdomen to insert a graft device.
