DHA, EPA beneficial for bone health: QU study – The Peninsula Qatar

Doha: A Qatar University study has disclosed that supplementation of fish oil (FO) with a maximum content of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) starting at middle age may be beneficial for maintaining better bone health as one age.

The study, published in the 16th issue of the university’s Research Magazine, also stated that fish oils aren’t all the same, adding “the EPA and DHA content are the essential elements as well as the quality of the fish oils.

The research led by Dr. Md Mizanur Rahman, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences at QU, fed 12-month old mice with 1% and 4% CFO and 4% omega-6 safflower oil (SFO) diets. It also included a group with a 4% regular FO with low content EPA and DHA diet and a group with a lab chow diet as a control for 12 months.
