Banning certain single-use plastic bags aims to protect environment

Domestic and Foreign Trade Assistant Undersecretary at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Shaikh Hamad bin Salman Al Khalifa, has asserted that the decision to ban the import, production, distribution or sale of single-use plastic bags of less than 35 microns in thickness is within the Ministry’s initiatives to protect and preserve the environment. The decision is in line with the government’s programme to secure an environment that supports sustainable development, and to achieve Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030 in protecting natural spaces and reducing environmental pollution, he said, noting that it aims to protect the environment from pollutants, and reduce the spread of plastic waste, which poses a great danger to wildlife. He indicated that decision, which became effective on Sunday, September 18, applies to all types of single-use plastic bags with a thickness of less than 35 microns, adding that single-use bags with a thickness of more than 35 microns, and those used for medical purposes, as well as bags manufactured for export purpose shall not be affected.
