Egypt’s trade and industry minister tests positive for coronavirus

Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea has contracted the novel coronavirus and is performing her duties from home, the ministry's media center reported.

The minister is already in the recovery period and is expected to perform her job at the ministry within the coming few days, the media center added.

Gamea made limited public appearances this month, including delivering a speech in a plenary session at the House of Representatives on 2 February

Gamea graduated from the commerce faculty at Cairo University in 1984.

She assumed the post of trade and industry minister in December 2019.

Egypt has so far recorded 178,151 cases of coronavirus, 10,353 fatalities and 137,837 full recoveries since the outbreak of the pandemic in February 2020.

The country has recently implemented stricter measures to curb the spread of the virus after a sharp spike in cases in December of last year.

Several Egyptian officials and public figures contracted coronavirus during the past year, including the 84-year-old former top diplomat Amr Moussa, international football players Mohamed Salah and Mohamed Elneny, as well as a number of governors.
