Saudi Crown Prince envisions 50% electricity from renewables by 2030 – MEP MiddleEast

The Crown Prince and Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, HRH Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, has announced plans for the "Green Saudi Initiative“ and the "Green Middle East Initiative“, which aims to combat climate change, promote sustainability, boost renewable energy sources, and protect green landscapes and nature.

The "Green Saudi Initiative“ aims to meet 50% of the kingdom's electricity production needs through renewable energy projects by 2030, thus, reducing carbon emissions by more than 4% of the global contributions.

In addition, the initiative intend to eliminate more than 130 million tonnes of carbon emissions by using clean hydrocarbon technologies.

The initiative will also work to increase the percentage of protected land to more than 30% - which will mean protecting approximately 600,000km2 of land - exceeding the global target at 17% per country.

Commenting on the initiative, the Crown Prince HRH Mohammed bin Salman said: "As a leading global oil producer, we are fully aware of our share of the responsibility in advancing the fight against the climate crisis, and that just as our pioneering role in stabilising energy markets during the oil and gas era is represented, we will work to lead the next green era.“
