UAE reaffirms commitment to cut CO2 emissions by 70%

UAE Energy Minister Suhail Al Mazrouei has reiterated the country’s commitment to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 70 percent and increase clean energy use by 50 percent by 2050. "Today, renewables alongside new technologies and services are transforming the business of supplying and delivering power. For this energy transition, a more responsive and interconnected power system is emerging. This changing energy landscape offers new opportunities for both leadership and action,” Mazrouei said at the Middle East Energy virtual event Monday. Yousif al-Ali, the ministry's assistant undersecretary for electricity, water and future energy affairs spoke about energy diversification and the race to meet clean energy targets – strategies to reach net-zero. He said the UAE is well-positioned to be one of the top producers of hydrogen in the world. The UAE, an OPEC oil producer, has set its 2050 strategy to produce half its power from renewables and nuclear energy. While it currently produces much of its energy from natural gas, it has earmarked a greater potential role for hydrogen. The event also discussed the use of solar energy and the latest innovations in photovoltaics module design and installation.
