Bahrain Housing Minister calls for “building green and smart cities” – MEP MiddleEast

Bahrain's Housing Minister Bassim bin Yacub Al-Hamar has commended the Global Centre for Sustainable Development (GCSD) for focusing on building green and smart cities.

Speaking at the “Visions for Future Sustainable Cities, and Standards of Smart Green Cities” international webinar held by the GCSD in cooperation with the Housing and Building National Research Centre in Egypt, Al-Hamar also shared his thought on the national housing programme being implemented by Bahrain's Housing Ministry.

The webinar highlighted the role of the comprehensive sustainable development in developing cities; raising awareness for sustainability in construction, urbanisation, and city design sector; the importance of educating workers on the need to spread sustainable development goals (SDGs); and ways to promote the culture of smart and green cities among all social segments.

Al-Hamar indicated that newer towns in Bahrain provide thousands of housing units for Bahraini families, noting that the construction of new towns is in accordance with the UN goals related to the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030, particularly SDG 11 aiming to “make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.”
