I have spent over 25 years in the retail industry thinking about what it is that makes malls tick. Why do some malls succeed while others do not and what is in the DNA of a successful mall?

The winners in the retail sector, whether it be the UAE or elsewhere, have been those who have been quick to adapt to trends in consumer preference while remaining focused on what consumers will always come to expect of malls. I believe, what’s never going to change is the value that consumers will place on time, convenience, comfort and choice. For this reason, malls need to be more than just the sum of their parts – the ‘parts’ here being various retail, dining and entertainment experiences and brands.
