National Telecom Regulatory Authority fines Vodafone LE 20.5 million

The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) in Egypt on Thursday fined the Vodafone Group LE20.5 million (about US$ 414,000) due to technical malfunctions that impacted fourth generation services (4G) provided by the company earlier this week.

The NTRA explained in a statement on its Facebook page that it “Detected a technical malfunction in some of the main network devices that affected the fourth generation services provided by the company on the morning of Tuesday, March 5, as subscribers faced difficulties in obtaining 4G services for several hours.”

The authority added that it ordered the company to compensate impacted customers, in accordance with the general rules of compensation issued by the agency to companies operating in the Egyptian market, to protect the rights of users in the event that services affected.

These rules include progressive procedures and penalties for companies in cases of service interruption, the NTRA said, in accordance with the licenses granted to companies.
