The automated driving systems (ADS) company known today as Motional has been through multiple guises over the past 5 years. When Delphi and nuTonomy began their first robotaxi pilot tests in Singapore in the fall of 2016, they were rivals. Eventually, Delphi acquired nuTonomy and put the startup’s founder Karl Iagnemma in charge of developing an ADS from the best that the two companies had. Then Delphi spun off its powertrain business and renamed itself Aptiv. In 2020, Aptiv’s ADS unit became part of the joint-venture with Hyundai Motor Group that is Motional and now the company is showing off the first product of that combination, an automated Ioniq 5.
