For the second week in a row, we hit a pandemic-era low in jobless claims. This is a very welcome positive signal for the market and the labor situation. It may not be enough, though, to help the Dow break a 3-day losing streak. The Dow Jones dipped about 40 points, the S&P 500 was flat, and the Nasdaq saw some mild gains, led by Big Tech stocks such as Apple, Facebook, and Amazon. Investors remained cautious as they continued to digest how the delta variant goes, its effect on the economic reopening, and the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy. We will get a better idea of what the Fed plans to do during its September 21-22 meetings. Eyes are also on the European Central Bank after it too said it would slow down the pace of its bond purchases. Meanwhile, several airlines on Thursday also lowered their forecasts because of Covid’s resurgence, such as United Airlines, American Airlines, and Southwest Airlines.
