North Sharqiyah to set up 100-acre model grape farm

The Director General of Agricultural and Water Resources in North Sharqiyah announced plans to create a 100-acre model grape farmMuscat – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is set to revolutionise agricultural practices in North Sharqiyah by establishing a huge model farm for grape cultivation.

Eng Salim bin Saud al Kindi, Director General of Agricultural and Water Resources in North Sharqiyah governorate, announced the ministry’s plan to create a 100-acre (over 40 hectares) model farm dedicated to grapes.

This initiative, funded by the Oman India Fertiliser Company (OMIFCO) and the Agricultural Development Fund at a cost of RO200,000, aims to diversify crop production and bolster support for local farmers.

The project is designed not only to create job opportunities for farmers and rural workers but also to amplify investments in grape cultivation, thereby enhancing food security.

“It seeks to diminish the reliance on agricultural imports and contribute to the national income. Specialised farmers will manage these fields, employing modern cultivation and production techniques,” said Kindi.

Detailing the project’s phases, Kindi mentioned that the initial stage involves drilling an exploratory well to assess water availability, preparing the site, and conducting soil analyses.

The site will be announced on the Tatwair platform for selecting project beneficiaries.
