Omani, Indian experts discuss challenges in fishing sector

Oman, with its vast 3000km of coastline, stands on the threshold of an untapped economic opportunity in the fishing industryMuscat – Oman, with its vast 3000km of coastline, stands on the threshold of an untapped economic opportunity in the fishing industry. This was discussed by a group of fishing experts from Oman and India at the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industries (OCCI) on Monday.

Called the ‘Opportunities in the Oman Fisheries Sector’, the day-long seminar had more than ten experts from the industry and private sectors, besides the presence of Indian Ambassador H E Amit Narang as the guest of honour along with the other OCCI officials.

Despite this expansive coastal stretch, Oman has only a handful of ports catering to fishermen, and the lack of infrastructure hampers the industry’s potential for progress, the experts observed.

Speaking during the event, Mohammad Hanish, Principal Secretary, Industries, from the southern Indian state of Kerala, shed light on the sector’s challenges.

“The fishing sector is not organised, and there is a significant lack of infrastructure. Currently, 95% of the catch relies on the traditional means. It’’s high time we move to a more sustainable model with organised, modern, and secure boats.”
