Aboul Gheit calls for integrated Arab vision formulation to meet challenges of food security – Saudi Gazette

ALGIERS — The Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit called Friday for the formulation of an integrated Arab vision to meet the challenges of food security in the region.

Aboul Gheit said, in a speech he delivered during the opening of the Economic and Social Council meeting at the ministerial level, preparatory to the 31st Arab Summit, which will be hosted by Algeria on Nov. 1 and 2 that Arab food security indicators have deteriorated worryingly.

This worrying deterioration is not only because of the pandemic and the subsequent events, but also because of the coincidence of many factors and the accumulation of many problems.

The Secretary-General stressed that confronting these conditions is through reaching a comprehensive vision to reach the desired food sufficiency, and to bridge the food gap in the Arab world, with an integrative approach and a vision based on mobilizing Arab capabilities.

He pointed to some items of the meeting of the Arab Economic and Social Council Friday that will address the issue of Arab food security with this integrated approach, including the Arab strategy for sustainable agricultural development, the initiative to improve the technological quality of locally produced wheat, and the sustainability of Arab pastures.
