Survey: More Than One Billion People Were Unwilling To Get Vaccinated In 2020 [Infographic]

A recently published Gallup poll has found that the share of people across the globe willing to get vaccinated against Covid-19 during the first year of the pandemic fell short of the 70%-90% threshold experts believe is required to achieve herd immunity. While a 68% majority said they would be willing get vaccinated in 2020, there were considerable differences at country level. Gallup found that majorities would actually refuse a Covid-19 vaccine in 20 countries, predominantly across Eastern Europe and Africa. All in all, more than one billion people were unwilling to get the jab in the first year of the pandemic.



The highest levels of refusal were found in Gabon (66%), Cameroon (65%) and Jordan (62%) with Hungary, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Russia and Kazakhstan also recording refusal rates of 60% or higher. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the highest levels of willingness to get vaccinated were seen in Myanmar (96%), Nepal (87%) and Nicaragua (87%). While Russia boasted of being the first country to authorize a Covid-19 vaccine last year, it is now lagging behind other countries in its rollout due to high levels of hesitancy and distrust among its population.
