Google To Begin Licensing News After Years Of Resistance

Alphabet's Google yesterday announced it had content signed licensing agreements with newspaper publishers in Germany, Australia, and Brazil, as the beleaguered industry presses for payment for online news content that has been freely available for more than a decade.



Publishers will monetize their "high-quality“ content "through an enhanced storytelling experience that lets people go deeper into more complex stores,“ according to a blog post from Brad Bender, Google's Vice President Product Management, News Publishing.



 "A vibrant news industry matters“”perhaps now more than ever, as people look for information they can count on in the midst of a global pandemic and growing concerns about racial injustice around the world,“ Bender writes. "But these events are happening at a time when the news industry is also being challenged financially. We care deeply about providing access to information and supporting the publishers who report on these important topics.“
