A government employee in Oman has been sentenced to five years in prison and fined OMR1.2 million for embezzling the same amount from funds that were meant for orphans and minors.

The man, who worked at the head of the inheritance department, embezzled the money of orphans and minors and misused his position to achieve personal benefits, by receiving the amount in the form of cash and unjustly using it for his personal gain.

He has been convicted of embezzlement and imprisoned for five years and fined about OMR1.2 million, the State’s Financial and Administrative Audit Institution (SAI) said in its report.

It added that the employee has also been convicted of money laundering and imprisoned for five years; fined OMR 50,000; dismissed from his job, and further banned from holding any public position.
