Vice Media-owned Refinery29, an editorial website geared toward Millennial women, announced Tuesday that it has hired New York Times alum Simone Oliver as the new editor-in-chief, placing a Black woman atop the masthead following a turbulent period when former employees went public with toxic workplace and racial discrimination allegations.

Oliver spent 13 years in various editorial and strategy posts at the New York Times, served as digital director at Allure and will join Refinery29 on September 30 from Facebook and Instagram's global media partnerships teams, where she currently leads projects with lifestyle publishers and magazines, according to the statement emailed to Forbes.
