UAE: Record rain in UAE as Kuwait shuts schools – Gulf Digital News

DUBAI: Kuwait will shut its schools and universities for a day and the UAE received record-breaking rainfall as the GCC continued to be battered by unsettled weather conditions.

Kuwait’s Education Minister Dr Ali Al Mudhaf said in a statement yesterday that the country will close schools and universities nationwide for a day due to unstable weather conditions.

All middle and high school exams scheduled for today will also be postponed, he said, giving schools the leeway to rearrange their final exams as they see fit.

The day off does not include faculty and staff, who are still required to go to work, added the statement.

Heavy rains lashed much of the country yesterday, flooding roads and disrupting traffic.

Kuwait’s Fire Forces said since yesterday’s early hours its teams responded to 103 calls for help and rescued 106 people who were stranded on flooded roads and in houses following the overnight downpour.

Meanwhile, authorities in several Gulf countries yesterday renewed weather warnings as several days of heavy rains battered the usually arid region.

The GCC countries usually experience mild winters, with the exception of rare and brief episodes of flooding rains between November and January.

Record torrential rainfall has hit the UAE, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
