Unicef welcomes Oman’s commitment to comprehensive social protection

Muscat – The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) has congratulated the sultanate on its commitment to introduce a new national social protection system.

The new comprehensive system introduces a number of benefits that will address inequality and contribute to the well-being of children and vulnerable members of the population over the course of their lives.

The draft legislation was recently approved by the Council of Ministers and will be made a law via a Royal Decree issued by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik.

“Unicef commends the Government of Oman on this excellent initiative,” said Sumaira Chowdhury, Unicef Representative to Oman.

“Social protection supports Oman Vision 2040’s aim of a strong and cohesive society in which everyone can enjoy a decent standard of living – especially children, young people, women, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.”

As well as providing individuals with access to financial support and other resources throughout their lives, especially in times of need, the new system aligns with international best standards and practices, ensuring that it meets global benchmarks for quality and effectiveness.

Over the past two years, Unicef has worked closely with the government’s social protection project team to contribute to the design of this new system, in collaboration with the International
