‎Wizz Air mulls operating license to set up airline in Saudi Arabia: CEO

European budget carrier Wizz Air is considering applying for an Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) in Saudi Arabia to base an airline there, said CEO Jozsef Varadi.

"The scope of ... exploring opportunities in the country may go beyond being an inbound carrier and may also involve making direct investments," Varadi told Reuters.

Wizz Air also announced today the launch of 20 new routes (20 flights per week), from Bucharest, Budapest, Catania, Larcana, Milan, Naples, Rome, Tirana, Varna, Venice and Vienna to Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam.

In May, Saudi Ministry of Investment signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Wizz Air with the aim of exploring investment opportunities in the air transport sector in the Kingdom, according to Argaam's data.

The company also launched a low-cost airline two years ago in Abu Dhabi, named Wizz Abu Dhabi, in partnership with Abu Dhabi Development Holding (ADQ).
