Banks In Lebanon Will Remain Closed Until Further Notice

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Lebanon’s Banking Association said that the banks will remain closed until further notice, citing ongoing “risks” to employees following a spree of bank stick-ups last week.

The Banking Association said in the statement that the decision to extend the strike came in the absence of any measures or even assurances from the state and all security institutions in order to secure a safe environment for work.

Lebanon’s banks had planned to reopen their doors on Thursday after a three-day closure announced last week.

Since 2020, Lebanese banks have witnessed several raids by depositors to retrieve their money with their own hands amid the ongoing banking crisis, storming bank branches even with plastic pistols in a series of significant hold-ups that saw a quick rise in the last week.
