Muscat: The Environment Authority has established a gene bank to preserve and freeze genetic assets of wild and endangered animals of economic value.

EA said in a statement: "The Environment Authority, in cooperation with the Resources and Affairs of the Royal Court, completed the first version of the project to establish a gene bank to preserve the genetic assets of wild animals of economic value by freezing outside their original location. The tests were carried out in the Wildlife and Living Organisms Reserve in Al Wusta Governorate."

Through the scientific project, the authority aims to preserve and freeze genetic material from wild animals, especially those threatened with extinction, to ensure their sustainability, by providing reserve genetic material that enables the recovery of genetic assets in the event of loss of animal breeds due to diseases or natural disasters.
