The World Health Organisation estimates that Covid-19 has claimed 14.9 million lives, either directly or indirectly.

The number of deaths resulting from the pandemic, or "excess mortality", between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021 was in the range of 13.3 million to 16.6 million people, according to a WHO study released on Thursday.

The report showed that the effect of the virus was worse than estimated.
