First-of-its-kind thoracic surgery unit opens in The Royal Hospital



Muscat – The Royal Hospital inaugurated a thoracic surgery unit on Tuesday. It is the first of its kind in Oman and aims to provide advanced and comprehensive care.

The unit will deal with lung and esophageal cancers, pleural diseases, tumours of the mediastinum, thorax, diaphragm problems, lung diseases, and benign esophagus and chest injuries, in addition to surgeries and diagnostic and treatment services through pulmonary and gastroscopy endoscopy.

Dr Sami bin Sulaiman al Farsi, Director General of Royal Hospital, confirmed to ONA that the opening of the thoracic surgery unit is realisation of one of the most ambitious plans to expand the services provided by the hospital.

“The unit targets various segments of society, especially since the hospital is one of the most important reference institutions in Oman,” he said.

On the occasion, Dr Aziza bint Nasser al Rawahiya, from the thoracic surgery unit, said that inauguration of the unit reinforces the Ministry of Health’s commitment to provide specialised, high-quality healthcare, keeping abreast of developments in the field and pioneering the use of new surgical techniques.
