MoH, WHO declare Nizwa a ‘Healthy City’

Muscat – With an aim to promote health and achieve Sustainable Development Goals, the Ministry of Health (MoH) declared Nizwa a ‘Healthy City’ on Sunday.

The World Health Organization’s ‘Healthy Cities’ is a global movement working to put health high on the social, economic and political agendas of city governments. The WHO European Healthy Cities Network has brought together close to 100 flagship cities and 30 national networks under the programme.

The celebration was held under the patronage of H E Dr Fatma bint Mohammed al Ajmi, Undersecretary for Administrative, Financial and Planning Affairs in MoH, in the presence of a number of officials.

Dr Ahmed al Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, was also there to celebrate the city’s achievement. On the occasion, he said, “The Healthy Cities programme is one of the main initiatives of WHO in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Healthy Cities achieve greater health equity and mitigate the effects of environmental conditions and climate change.”

He added that Healthy Cities are working to accelerate the achievement of ‘health for all’ by promoting equitable access to high-quality healthcare services and creating an environment conducive to adapting a healthy lifestyle that ensures a healthier and more prosperous life for all
