Banned tobacco hidden among coconut and lemons seized in Qatar – The Peninsula

Doha: Maritime Customs Department at Hamad Port thwarted an attempt to smuggle banned chewing tobacco into Qatar.

The attempt was foiled due to the suspicion of a customs official who seized these prohibited items, weighing 25.2396kg, while they were scanned through detection devices, hidden among shipment containing coconut and lemons.

This is the third seizure of prohibited tobacco in the last few weeks. The officials at Hamad Port seized 2,962Kg prohibited tobacco and betel nut on November 7, 2022 while another huge haul of prohibited tobacco weighing over 7,000kg was seized at the same port on October 27, 2022.

Customs officers are provided with all means of support including the latest devices and continuous training to read the body language of passengers and to be aware of the latest methods followed by smugglers.
