Sisi approves loan with Kuwait to establish 2 desalination plants in Egypt’s North Sinai

CAIRO – 25 July 2021: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi approved a loan agreement between Egypt the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development to establish two desalination plants in the new cities of Rafah and Bir al-Abed, North Sinai. The loan, which was signed on November 23, 2020, totals 5.5 million Kuwaiti dinars (about US$ 18,27 million). President Sisi's decision was published on Sunday in the state's official gazette Al-Waqa'i' al-Misriyya to be effective on the following day. In April 2020, North Sinai Governor Mohamed Shousha announced that construction of the largest desalination plant in Africa and the Middle East has started. The capacity of the first phase is 100,000 cubic meters daily, and that of the second and third phases is 300,000 cubic meters per day, he added.
