Masdar, partners secure land for 10 GW wind power plant in Egypt

Cairo – Mubasher: Infinity Power, Hassan Allam Utilities, and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) have signed a land access agreement with the Egyptian government for a 10-gigawatts (GWs) onshore wind farm in Egypt.

The agreement gives the consortium of the three companies access to a land spanning 3,025 square kilometres in West Suhag, according to a cabinet statement.

The consortium will utilise the land to conduct the necessary development studies for the $10 billion project, including measurement campaigns, geotechnical and topographic surveys, and environmental studies.

The mega wind project is planned to produce 47,790 GWh of clean energy per year and reduce Egypt’s annual carbon emissions by around 9%.

The project will contribute to Egypt's goal of obtaining 42% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030. Additionally, the wind farm is projected to save the country approximately $5 billion annually in natural gas expenses.

The Infinity Power, Hassan Allam Utilities, and Masdar consortium signed the initial agreement to develop the 10 GW wind farm with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company in late 2022 during the UN climate change conference (COP27).

Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, said: “I congratulate Egypt’s leadership on this major milestone for the country, with what is set to
