EA holds meeting to combat oil pollution in Sea of Oman



Muscat – In an effort to combat oil pollution in Omani waters and Strait of Hormuz, Dr Abdullah Ali al Omari, chairman of Environment Authority (EA), held a meeting with an Iranian delegation in Nairobi on Wednesday.

A statement issued by EA, said, ‘The meeting aimed to search for aspects of cooperation in the field of combating oil pollution in the waters of the Sea of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz, and many other environmental aspects.’

In 2021, EA had announced that it received 361 complaints related to pollution in the past three years, with the maximum being lodged in 2019. Of these, 96 were registered in 2018, 195 in 2019 and 70 in 2020.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, an official at EA, said, “The Pollution Control Centre in EA receives two types of reports – normal accidents and environmental violations.

“Some of these are related to oil spills, felling of trees, burning of wastes in farms, piling up of construction wastes and tyres near residential areas, emissions from quarrying sites and crushers, encroachment in wildlife areas, sewage discharge near residential areas, as well as discharge of oil residues by ships in Oman’s marine environment.”
