Shake-up at Kazakh energy firms

London, 17 January (Argus) — Two figures with links to Kazakhstan's former president Nursultan Nazarbayev have been removed from energy sector posts. The changes lend weight to speculation that the recent unrest in Kazakhstan may have been at least partly linked to a power struggle between current president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and his predecessor.

The departures include the general-director of pipeline company operator Kaztransoil (KTO), Dimash Dosanov. Dosanov, who has run KTO since August 2016, is the husband of Nazarbayev's youngest daughter Aliya. A replacement head of KTO has not yet been announced.

Before taking charge of KTO, Dosanov held senior roles there, including heading the Kazakhstan-China Pipeline joint venture. In 2010-14 he served as deputy general manager at NCOC, the operating consortium of the Kashagan oil field.
