Muscat – Muscat Municipality, represented by the Directorate General of Health Affairs, presented a paper – titled ‘Fats and oils in food processing and its impact on health’ – at a seminar organised by Oman Association for Consumer Protection.

The paper included information on the harmful effects of oils and fats, and the direct relationship of these with obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and other health conditions.

The paper also explained the risks of reheating cooking oil several times, which leads to health complications including obesity, chest pain, stomach pain, indigestion and heart diseases, as consumption of trans fats increases the level of harmful cholesterol in the body.

The paper also suggested alternatives, such as olive oil, air frying, and drying fried foods with paper towels before consumption.

One of the objectives of Oman Association for Consumer Protection is to raise awareness among consumers about the quality of foods and their relationship with consumer health and safety, which is also an important part of Muscat Municipality’s work.
