Amcor to use ExxonMobil's circular PE for packaging

Singapore, 19 April (Argus) — Switzerland-based packaging firm Amcor will buy circular polyethylene (PE) from ExxonMobil for use in its packaging products.

ExxonMobil's circular PE is certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC+) scheme. ISCC is an independent multi-stakeholder organisation that provides a globally applicable certification process for the sustainability of raw materials and products.

Amcor said it is the first company to purchase certified circular PE produced using ExxonMobil's Exxtend technology for advanced recycling. This will add to the 113,000t of recycled material that Amcor used in its packaging in 2021, it said.

Amcor has pledged to make all its packaging products recyclable or reusable by 2025. The company is building innovation centres in Belgium and China to support its research into sustainability in the plastics and packaging sector.

Petrochemical producers and downstream converters are increasingly shifting towards sustainable packaging because of environmental pressure to limit single-use plastics.

US toy producer Mattel last week said that it will make toys from renewable polymers manufactured by Saudi petrochemical producer Sabic.
