Coal phase-out coalition lacks biggest players

London, 4 November (Argus) — Some notable coal consumers — including Morocco, Poland, Ukraine and Vietnam — have signed up to a coal phase-out coalition at the Cop 26 summit in Glasgow. But more than 85pc of global coal-fired capacity is absent from the landmark agreement announced by the UK government on 3 November.

The UK said a 190-member coalition of countries and organisations has agreed to phase out coal power and support for new coal-fired power plants.

The "Global Coal to Clean Power Transition Statement" commits nations to ending all new coal-fired power generation domestically and internationally and to phase out coal power from "major economies" in the 2030s and from the rest of the world in the 2040s.
