Russia Moves to Make Island Home to Half a Million Residents Carbon Neutral By 2025

In the face of international pressure to combat global warming and internal desires to avoid sacrificing its fossil fuel industry, Russia is looking to take action on climate change by making an island home to half a million people carbon neutral by 2025, the Associated Press reported.

The Kremlin has given the green light to authorities moving to have Sakhalin Island, located north of Japan, reach net-zero carbon emissions in a matter of years.

The goal will be made easier by the makeup of Russia's largest island, two-thirds of which is covered in forests. Russia hopes that Sakhalin's trees will be able to absorb the same volume of carbon dioxide that the island's residents and businesses generate, AP reported.
