Road to ruin or riches?

Speakers offered plenty of encouragement for the industry during the LPG Week conference in Dubai, writes Matt Scotland

London, 14 December (Argus) — You could be forgiven for thinking this year's LPG Week would have a sombre feel, coming swiftly after the UN Cop 26 climate summit that raised the stakes for the fossil fuel industry. But the conference, held by the World LPG Association (WLPGA) in Dubai early this month, was determinedly optimistic, trumpeting LPG as a core component of the energy transition, as well as the destination.

Delegates heard again and again that LPG still has an exciting future despite accelerating climate change action and tightening limits on fossil fuels. But this will depend on the industry convincing governments of its value in terms of climate change and economic development, and on viable renewable alternatives — be it bio-LPG, renewable DME or something else — being found.
