UAE aims to be among top 10 hydrogen-producing nations

The UAE aims to be in the world’s top 10 producers of hydrogen with ambitions to capture 25% of low carbon hydrogen key markets.

An official from the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure Sharif Al Olama told Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week that the UAE has already taken “great strides” in developing clean hydrogen to reduce its cost as a sustainable energy source.

He told the conference that global hydrogen demand is expected to rise more than 600 million metric tonnes per year by 2050, 12% of the total global energy demand, according to a report in The National.

Last year, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced a green hydrogen project with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy, located at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.

The UAE is to invest AED 600 billion in clean and renewable energy to achieve its 2050 net-zero targets.

China is currently the world’s largest producer of hydrogen, much of it made using fossil fuels.
