UNICEF to implement water, sanitation projects in Upper Egypt over 3 years – Egypt Today

CAIRO – 29 November 2023: UNICEF and the Baxter International Foundation announced Tuesday a three-year initiative aimed at implementing climate-smart water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programming for thousands of people in Upper Egypt’s governorates of Aswan, Assiut, Qena, Minya and Luxor through community engagement, education and rehabilitation of primary health units.





 





The initiative is worth $2.5 million and it is needed in a country that has an annual water deficit of around seven billion cubic meters and where there are 7.3 million people deprived of access to safe water.





 





The initiative's goals include providing technical support to governmental bodies to increase access to WASH services, equipping more than 4,000 households with safe drinking water and sewage connections.





 





Another goal is Improving access to quality WASH services in more than 100 primary care units, including gender-separated and disability-friendly sanitation services.





 





That is in addition to helping 150 schools and 40 nurseries develop and implement action plans and mitigation strategies focused on climate change and WASH.





 





The initiative also targets to support medical teams at healthcare facilities in terms of delivering climate-adaptive health and nutrition services and education for mothers and
