LONDON - New wastewater infrastructure planned for the rural developing region of Fayoum in Middle Egypt will help improve sanitation service access throughout the region.

The Egyptian Holding Company for Water and Watewater (HCWW) will build the new infrastructure, with professional service company Stantec leading the consortium.

Stantec will provide both contract supervision consultancy and project implementation support for the large-scale construction programme aimed at expanding the area's sewage system network, water reuse capabilities and wastewater treatment.

Fayoum, a developing region approximately 90km southwest of Cairo, is in close proximity to one of the most important tourist attractions in the country, Lake Qarun, the third largest lake in Egypt.

However, over half of the areas' communities are not connected to a centralised wastewater network. Additionally, sanitation service coverage is low in the region's less populated areas. Raw sewage is discharged directly into Lake Qarun, the area's primary resource of freshwater, and agricultural drains as a result of the aforementioned lack of access.

Such pollution has caused severe environmental, social and economic harm to the community.
