HORROR AT DAWN

DIYARBAKIR, Turkey: The most powerful earthquake to strike Turkey and Syria in nearly a century killed over 2,300 people on Monday, sparked frantic rescues and was felt as far away as Greenland. The 7.8-magnitude early morning quake, followed by dozens of aftershocks, wiped out entire sections of major Turkish cities in a region filled with millions who have fled Syria’s civil war and other conflicts.

HH the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah sent a cable of condolences to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, expressing sorrow over the earthquake. In the cable, HH the Amir expressed condolences to the Turkish president and the victims’ families, wishing speedy recovery of those injured. HH the Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Al-Nawaf Al-Sabah sent similar cables to Erdogan.

Upon orders of HH the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, a decree was issued on Monday to dispatch aid and medical equipment by air to Turkey. As part of the relief efforts, teams from the foreign ministry, fire department, Kuwait Red Crescent Society, health ministry and Kuwait army will participate.
